As the months get colder, there’s usually one indicator you won’t miss: why is the floor so cold first thing in the morning?
We all know the feeling, waking up all cosy in a duvet burrito, only to be rudely awoken by the shock of a frosted floor.
Fear not, for we’re here to solve all of your morning shivers!
How Can Carpet Help with The Cold?
Carpet can of course help with the physical feeling of the floor, but the warmest carpet can do much more:
- Retain heat for longer
- Heat up quicker than other flooring types
- Lower heating bills/costs
- Spread heat throughout the house
There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing the ‘warmest carpet’, and there isn’t just one option.
This blog is here to guide you through which carpets will help your home in the right way, and how to feel the most comfortable.
What Should I Look For In The Warmest Carpet?
When choosing a carpet for warmth, it’s natural to lean toward a certain pile type, cut piles are usually deeper, and feel softer.
However, the warmest carpet aren’t always the softest! What you need to look for is the tog rating.
The tog rating, in short, means the higher the tog, the more it will retain heat and the better it will be at insulating. Tog ratings generally range from 0.70 to over 3.00.
One of the higher togs in our portfolio belongs to Stainfree Indulgence, at 2.31. This range has an array of pastel shades perfect to fit in with any style and lighten any room.
This range was created around relaxation and personal comfort to bring you a soft, stylish carpet.
What Can I Do If My Carpet Doesn’t Have a High Tog?
If your carpet doesn’t have a high tog, don’t fret. There are plenty of other factors that go into making your carpet the warmest it can be!
There are two more factors that help with keeping your flooring warm:
- Underlay
- Underfloor heating
Underfloor heating is known for heating your house more generally, reducing cold spots across large areas. They also run at a lower temperature than most generic radiators, saving you money along the way. For more information the Carpet Foundation blog on underfloor heating
Underfloor heating also works with most flooring types. For example, all our Softstep vinyl floorings also work with underfloor heating!

To use underfloor heating to get your carpet the warmest it can be, you may need to use certain types of protection or look for certain carpet types.
Usually, carpets with rubber backing will make it harder for the heat to get into the room.
Our Stainfree Maximus range has a fleece backing (along with a majority of our Stainfree range), as well as a 1.7 tog rating. This range pairs perfectly with underfloor heating and brings comfort as well as practicality.

Although it may be efficient in the long run, you may not want to splash out on an expense like underfloor heating. That’s where underlay comes in!
Underlay is a great way to reduce heating costs and maintain a cosy atmosphere. Not only that, but it can boost your carpets’ lifetime and comfort.
Underlay is made up of tiny fibres, each of them essentially acting as an insulator. Underlay is particularly good at keeping cold air from coming in, being the barrier between your cold, hard floor, and your soft carpet.
What’s The Warmest Carpet Material?
In terms of the warmest carpet, there’s a slight difference in the material. If you’re willing to go the extra mile for that extra warmth, the material matters.
It may be a little obvious, but wool carpets can provide additional warmth. Wool as a material naturally retains heat due to the coiled build up.
Reports indicate that a wool carpet can save between 8-13% of heating and cooling cost with the greatest insulation provided by thicker carpets on underlay.
Our Wilton Royal range has plenty of beautiful wool options to go with and work alongside any home environment.
Our new Royal Charter Deluxe range comes in an 80/20 wool blend, giving you the practicality of a polypropylene carpet, and the insulation of a wool carpet!

However, that doesn’t mean that polypropylene isn’t warm! It still has thermal properties that hold in heat and keep areas warm. Polypropylene is often used in cut and Saxony pile carpets, due to its soft, plush nature. It has more of a ‘silky’ feel.
Our new range Stainfree Caress has exactly that feel, and a stunning velvet effect. It provides comfort, as well as practicality, being bleach cleanable and a thick cut pile to keep heat focused.

Polyester is also a warm material, acting just as well as polypropylene. It is comfortable, soft, and can hold heat extremely well. Our range Deep Feelings has an awe-inspiring tog of 2.66, providing a luxurious feeling under-foot and being one of the warmest carpet we can offer!

Deep Feelings belongs to our Love Story range, a collection of ultra-soft, but practical carpets. This range is designed to make your home feel cosy, offering nothing but comfortable living.
It’s all down to personal preference, and the type of feeling you’re looking for.
Final Tips For Keeping Warm
While there are different carpet types and materials, there are some more steps you can take to ensure that your carpet does all it can to keep you warm.
- Carpet larger areas – Naturally, you don’t want to use carpet in your kitchen or bathroom, but the more you use it throughout the house, the more efficient it’ll be!
- Choose the right underlay – it’s crucial that you look into the best underlay for your floor. It keeps out drafts and feels much warmer and comfier with the right underlay!
- Use carpet cuts for a rug – whilst you may not be able to carpet an entire area, you can use a rug to help absorb and focus some of the heat
All our product range pages show the backing used and the tog rating to help you to find the warmest carpet for your home. We also have a massive network of retailers that stock our products who will be happy to help if you have any questions.
